Branch Background

Glasgow is Scotland's largest and most vibrant city!

Glasgow is located in the West of Scotland and derives its name from the Gaelic for the “green place”. It was initially the site of an Abbey and grew to become the Glasgow we all know today.

There is a population of 800,000 people from varying multi-cultural and multi-faith backgrounds, including 30,000 Muslims from the Sub-Continent, who have developed one of the most affluent communities in the UK.

It is the home of Irn-Bru, of Celtic and Rangers Football clubs (not to forget Partick Thistle!), Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Lord Kelvin, George Galloway MP, the “Armadillo” and amongst other things the famous “Glasgie Kiss”.

The city is well served by public transport, and has good car, bus, rail, air and underground links to get you around Glasgow, the UK or abroad.

There are many shopping complexes with the Buchanan Galleries and the Braehead Shopping centre deserving a mention here and many restaurants and take-aways ready to cater for all and there are many specialist shops catering for Muslims scattered around Glasgow.

There are many places of interest in Glasgow; many museums, parks, sports complexes, and places of amusement, from ten pin bowling to paintball.

Numerous Mosques are located throughout the city and are easy to get to.

About the weather, it does get pretty cold in the winter, however summers are moderate and pleasant. But as a teacher of mine said about Glasgow “the city is cold but the peoples hearts are warm.”

The Islamic Society of Britain, “serves” the city’s Islamic needs by educating Muslims and the society at large in the fields of Islamic knowledge, social matters and by organising activities.

With over 60 committed members, we try and cater for the diverse Glaswegian landscape by organising study circles, lectures, exhibitions, presentations, Radio Ramadhan, Islam Awareness Week and many other activities. We cater for all.

We invite you, the Glasgow Muslim, to get involved. Complete the membership form or contact our local or national office and inspire to live Islam!

If you want to get involved in Islamic work with ISB for the betterment of the community then contact us
