Welcome to the Islam Awareness Week website!

The theme for Islam Awareness Week 2009 is "Walk the Talk". It is about recognising our common humanity, celebrating our diversity and respecting each other.

Islam Awareness Week (IAW) has been taking place across the UK in the third week of November for the last 15 years. Initially the aim was simply to provide a platform for British Muslims themselves to help remove misconceptions about Islam, which is now the UK’s second largest faith.

Since then, it has also become an opportunity for people of all faiths (and none) to come together in a spirit of understanding and co-operation. IAW is also about helping to build links between people, a celebration of art and culture and getting people to work together for the common good.

Britain’s bond of belief revealed as Islam Awareness Week 2009 launches

  • New research from the Islamic Society of Britain challenges the stereotype of religion as a divisive force and reveals Britain’s thirst for theological knowledge. The research reveals:
  • 60% of people agree that believing in God, no matter which one, gives people something in common.
  • More than half (53%) believe religion can be used to bring communities together, even if people believe different things.
  • Almost half (47%) would like to know more about other religions.

 Walk the Talk

The theme for IAW in 2009, 'Walk the Talk', has been chosen to mark the occasion of the first ever Inter Faith Week in England, which is taking place at the same time as IAW this year.

‘Walk the Talk’ is about encouraging everyone to get out and about and get to know people of other faiths. This may be people who you may not otherwise get a chance to meet or it may be just your neighbours and colleagues wherever you live.

Talking face to face and listening to each other leads to a better understanding of each other and that will hopefully lead to walking or working together side by side to create a better future.

Would you like to get involved?

During the week a range of activities take place in towns and cities across the country. They may include exhibitions, social events, or voluntary activities for charity. Everyone is invited to attend or take part. It is hoped that those who take part will be able to use these opportunities to develop friendships and relationships with people from other backgrounds.

with a single step.”
