Supporting Schools Project

Planning Meeting - Tuesday 6th July 7pm

The concern raised by the recent Yougov poll on the lack of awareness of Islam has coincided with a new campaign to promote a more positive perspective of Islam. While billboards are a laudable attempt at inspiring people on Islam, the long term method of addressing negative perceptions of Islam and Muslims is through education, through our schools and nurseries.

Unfortunately at present the teaching of Islam in schools is grossly inadequate as noticed by many parents, the present climate of “cut-backs” will no doubt further exasperate the problem. This need has led to schools seeking other avenues of support without the need for major funding.

This important concern has been long recognised by iiScotland, with the emphasis for Muslims whether parents or otherwise to proactively assist schools in providing support to children studying Islam as part of R.E. iiScotland has over the years already provided such support to schools by delivering presentations and providing materials for use by children. Yet what has been achieved so far is limited and there remains a great deal more that can be done to develop this work even further.

In pursuit of these aims iiScotland will host a planning meeting to discuss the issue of supporting schools and identifying methods of delivering this crucial project.  Whether you are a parent with first hand experiences about the issue or someone wishing to provide support in development of tools, or whatever, you are most welcome to attend and provide your input.
