Imam al-Muhasibi laid the foundation for the flowering of the spiritual tradition in Islam, while the standing of al-Ghazzali can be seen simply through the title that Sunni Islam conferred upon him -'The proof of Islam'.

SESSION 1
The form and function of dialectic theology: The perpetual relevance of Imam al-Ghazzali
Dr Adi Setia is currently a Lecturer and Assistant Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the Department of General Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM); a Senior Fellow at Himpunan Keilmuan Muda (HAKIM); and an executive committee member of the Islamic Science Academy Malaysia.
He was research fellow at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) during the directorship of its founder Professor Dr. Sayyid Muhammad Naquib al-‘Attas, before joining IIUM. Prior to embarking on formal academic work he studied at traditional Islamic madrasahs (pondoks). His current research interests are in history and philosophy of science in relation to a “Kalam of the Age”.
SESSION 2
Spirituality for the Past and Present: al-Harith al-Muhasibi and the Path of Sincerity
Dr. Gavin Picken is a Lecturer in Islamic Studies and Arabic at the University of Edinburgh. He completed his undergraduate studies in the field of Biology graduating from Manchester in 1991. He changed direction, however, by studying Arabic Language at the International Islamic University in Medina.
He furthered his academic pursuit of Islamic Studies via an undergraduate program in Universiti Brunei Darussalam, majoring in Islamic Law (al-shari’a) and then, by completing an MA degree in Arabic Studies by research at the University of Leeds. He continued his PhD studies at the same institute and graduated in June 2005. Dr. Picken taught at the University of Leeds, University of Cambridge, the School of Oriental and African Studies and the American University of Sharjah, before joining the University of Edinburgh. His teaching and research interests concern the Islamic tradition in the formative period, including the development and codification of Islamic jurisprudence, theology and mysticism, as part of the evolution of Muslim intellectual history.
