Hi
I wondered if anyone had watched the Channel 4 programme last week on the Quran and the subsequent film on Mecca this weekend?
I found both programmes really interesting (as someone 'seeking') and just wondered what anyone else thought? It would be good to discuss them...

Hi Aileen,
I have seen the programme about the Quran last week, and wanted to watch the film on Mecca but missed it. The Quran documentary was interesting to see, as this was a new prospective for me. I liked some points and didn't like others as it seemed a little misleading from the truth about the Quran.
I was disappointed to some extent as I was hoping that they focused more on the Quran itself instead it just focused on the usual topics: What Quran says about Jihad? about Women? ...
Most of what they showed was about what people undrstood from the Quran and how they applied it in their lives according to what they wanted it to mean, which lead to divisions in schools of thoughts.
In the middle of the documentary after showing all those groups and differences, the presenter paused a silly question: if the Quran was the word of God why would it lead to divisions? I honestly did not like that! They could have asked a scholar and I am sure he will give them the answer to that, and obviousely the Quran did not lead to divisions, but it is us the people who did.
On the other hand, I liked it a lot when Dr Timothy Winter (School of Dinvinity, Cambridge) said: the Quran does not conform to any comfortable existing humain genre (of books), it's not a a history book, it's not a moralising book, it's not a sermon, it's not a text of science, it's "itself" there is no other text like it before or since it was revealed. To me, that is a lot closer to what the Quran is: The word of God. Also, they introduced a good brief history of how the Quran was preserved, how it was revealed to prophet Muhammad and recorded on skins, palm leaves and anything else...then put together in one single book after the death of Muhammad (PBUH).
It was not presenting the whole truth about the Quran, so I'll give it 6/10
, but anyway, any publicity is good publicity as people might get more curious about "the Quran" and might actually start investigating and seeking the truth about that book.

hey
I watched a few of them, I am away so I catch stuff on TV by accident ;S I liked some parts, and there were some really false stuff about Islam supported by some weired "scholars" the thing I disliked the most was female circumsision. good thing they also showed the correct view.its true all publicity is good, all the best to the seekers.
