Head teacher resigns after report

The pace of learning at St Albert's was found to be too slow
A head teacher resigned from her post at a primary school in Glasgow after inspectors described her leadership as unsatisfactory, it has emerged.
Frances Diver stepped down from St Albert's primary school, Pollokshields, after the inspection in June 2007.

An HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) report, published in October, described aspects of the school - including the curriculum - as weak.

Councillor Gordon Mathieson said the report was unacceptable.

Inspectors said that although almost all pupils were well-motivated and teachers were doing some good things, including pastoral learning, the pace of learning was slow.

Many children at all stages were found to be capable of far more than they were being asked to do.

The teaching process and learning was described as "adequate".

Inspectors found the head teacher did not monitor progress and her leadership was a major weakness.

Mr Mathieson, education convener with Glasgow City Council, said the local authority had been working with staff to tackle these issues.

"That gives me the confidence to say that if the inspection was to take place today, the report would be significantly better that it was even earlier this year," he said.
